The remote island of Niuafo’ou in northern Tonga has launched its first football-focused program, causing excitement among local children.
Through the Just Play Program, led by Education Officer Ioane Falekaono, students are being introduced to football as a new sporting activity on the island, traditionally dominated by netball and rugby.
“I observed children in Tongatapu displaying their football skills, which caught my attention,” Falekaono said. “When I moved here, I thought, why not introduce football through Just Play to Niuafo’ou?”
Despite initial reservations, local parents have warmed to the program, especially after seeing their children’s enthusiasm.
Teacher Susitina Peei said, “Once familiar with the program, children eagerly wanted to run it during morning sessions and breaks. I hope this will continue annually, potentially producing talented players from our island.”
With support from the OFC Grassroots Just Play Program and Tonga Football Association, Just Play now operates on Niuafo’ou twice weekly, involving 65 participants.
Future plans are underway to secure further support for Niuafo’ou, ensuring the island’s youth have lasting access to football and sports development.
