Former Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni, alongside ex-deputy PM Samiu Vaipulu and ex-Infrastructure Minister Sevenitini Toumo’ua, convened a press conference today at the Legislative Assembly Office Conference Room.
The 2-hour briefing aimed to clarify issues surrounding Lulutai Airlines and address other pressing national matters since raised by the current government.
Lulutai Airlines, Tonga’s sole domestic carrier, has been under scrutiny due to financial and operational challenges. The current administration is reviewing the airline’s viability, with Minister for Public Enterprises Piveni Piukala indicating that if operations cease, the government will act to meet domestic travel needs. He confirmed the dismissal of CEO Poasi Tei, replaced by aviation expert Tevita Palu, to lead the review.
Infrastructure concerns also took center stage. The Ministry of Infrastructure is addressing a $1 billion shortfall, prioritizing road maintenance. Efforts include routine upkeep of the bypass road in Tongatapu and planned maintenance for Nuku’alofa and village roads, pending cabinet approval.
The government has canceled a privatization agreement for Vava’u’s Lupepau’u International Airport due to incomplete and uncertain aspects, returning its management to Tonga Airports Limited.
Sovaleni indicated that this may not be their first press conference.
This is a developing story.
