A free veterinary clinic in Tonga has persevered through severe weather to provide essential care for local animals.
The South Pacific Animal Welfare (SPAW) team started its 2025 clinic on Monday, 12 May, at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forests and Fisheries (MAFFF) facility in Tokomololo.

Despite facing gale-force winds, heavy rain, and a temporary power outage, the clinic continues to offer free consultations and surgeries for pets and livestock until Friday, 16 May, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
“What a way to start the 2025 SPAW clinic—gale force winds, rain & no power for a few hours!” the Tonga Animal Welfare Society (TAWS) shared on social media, expressing gratitude to the team and pet owners who braved the conditions.
Volunteer veterinarians Dr Jade and Dr Emma, along with vet nurse Mhirron, are collaborating with MAFFF staff to deliver services including desexing, vaccinations, parasite control, and general health checks. These clinics are vital in Tonga, where there are no resident qualified veterinarians.

The Tonga Police are assisting with animal transportation to the clinic. Pet owners requiring transport can contact Acting CI Finau or Sgt Pau’u at 7231598 or 7231322 to make a reservation. Owners or their representatives must accompany their animals, as unattended animals cannot receive treatment.
While services are provided free of charge, donations are welcomed to support ongoing animal welfare efforts.
