The Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga has announced plans to establish its own university by 2026 as part of celebrations marking 200 years of Christianity in Tonga.
Interim Chancellor Rev. Samiuela Fonua revealed in an interview with Tonga Broadcasting that work is underway to secure licensing from the Ministry of Education and the Tonga National Qualifications and Accreditation Board (TNQAB) before the bicentennial anniversary.
The university will unite three existing institutions: Sia’atoutai Theological College, Tupou Tertiary Institute, and Hango Agricultural College.
These institutions will continue their current programs, with potential new offerings introduced under the university’s framework.

Fonua said that the university’s functions will initially operate from Tupou Tertiary Institute, with no immediate plans for new construction.
“Registration of the university must be completed first,” Fonua told Tonga Broadcasting.
The launch of this university marks a significant step in the Free Wesleyan Church’s commitment to education and Tonga’s development.
