The fuel prices have jumped again, with the outer islands facing the highest costs.
The Tonga Competent Authority (TCA) has announced new retail fuel prices effective April 1, 2025. While Tongatapu sees the lowest prices, $3.30 per litre for petrol, outer islands like Niuatoputapu and Niuafo’ou are paying over $4.00 per litre.
Niuafo’ou now has the highest fuel prices in the country, with petrol at $4.15 per litre and diesel at $4.20. In contrast, Vava’u and Ha’apai have slightly lower prices, but still above those in the capital.
In Vava‘u, prices rose from $3.25 in March to $3.35, while in Pangai, Ha‘apai, they went up from $3.55 to $3.65. Niuatoputapu saw a rise from $3.95 to $4.05 per litre, and Niuafo‘ou recorded the highest increase, climbing from $4.05 to $4.15 per litre.
The trend follows a global increase in oil prices and high transportation costs. Diesel, which saw a significant jump in March, also remains high in April, particularly in remote areas.
With continued reliance on imported fuel, Tonga remains vulnerable to international price fluctuations. Consumers, particularly in outer islands, will bear the brunt of these rising costs.
