Tonga’s upcoming national budget will prioritise private sector development, Prime Minister Hon. Dr ‘Aisake Eke announced on Friday.
Speaking at a press conference at the St George Government Building in Nuku’alofa, Dr Eke said the 2025–2026 budget, finalised by Cabinet, will be tabled in the Legislative Assembly next week.
“Focussing on the development of the private sector is what makes this budget special,” he told reporters.
While specific allocations remain confidential until the budget is formally presented, the Prime Minister’s remarks signal a shift from Tonga’s historically public sector-driven economy.
Tonga’s economy has long relied on foreign aid and remittances, with a large portion of domestic revenue spent on public sector wages.
The International Monetary Fund has urged Tonga to boost domestic revenue and reduce its debt risk through fiscal reforms and private sector support.
Dr Eke, who was elected Prime Minister in December 2024 after previously serving as Finance Minister, has pledged to reset Tonga’s economic direction.
The new budget is expected to reflect this commitment, with a focus on creating a more resilient and self-reliant economy.
The full budget will be presented to Parliament next week when its 2025-26 session starts.
