In a press conference at St George Government Building on Friday, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. ʻAisake Eke announced the approval of a $1 million emergency fund to address recent flooding, inadequate housing, and a dengue outbreak.
The government’s response aims to improve living conditions and prevent further damage from future floods. He was joined by Minister for Infrastructure Hon. Dr. Taniela Fusimalohi and other ministers.
A recent survey identified 20 homes in Halaovave and other areas particularly susceptible to flooding. Homes in Haʻapai are also experiencing sanitation issues. Eke emphasized that these findings necessitated immediate action.
The emergency funds will be directed towards flood relief, housing improvements, and combating the dengue outbreak. The funds will be used to repair homes affected by the flood and elevate their foundations.
Dr. ‘Ana Akauola, Minister for Health, highlighted the urgency of addressing the dengue situation to prevent further spread.
Fusimalohi added that his ministry is committed to improving infrastructure in flood-prone areas.
