The Cabinet has approved an additional $700,000 for the Anti-Corruption Commissioner’s office (ACC) to cover expenses until the end of the financial year in June, according to Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Aisake Eke.
Eke, who also serves as Minister of Finance, told reporters at last Friday’s press conference that this supplementary allocation tops up the ACC’s original budget of $850,000 for the current financial year, which was insufficient to meet the office’s needs.
The Anti-Corruption Commissioner, Chris LaHatte, said last December that the submission for a supplementary budget will help “become fully operational and fulfil our mandate effectively.”
The funds is set to support the ACC expenses including office supplies, vehicles, awareness programs and secure technological systems.
The ACC, established last year, is tasked with educating the public on corruption prevention and investigating alleged or suspected corrupt conduct in the public sector in accordance with the law.
