Tonga’s government has announced a $33 million pa’anga supplementary budget to support key sectors pending parliamentary approval.
Prime Minister Hon. Dr. ‘Aisake Eke detailed the allocations during a press conference at St George Government Building last Friday.
The proposed budget includes $1.4 million to extend school fee assistance for underprivileged families until June, following the conclusion of World Bank support in December.
An additional $5 million is earmarked for public loans at 1% interest through the Tonga Development Bank, facilitating students’ pursuit of studies abroad.
To address housing needs from the Hunga Tonga tsunami recovery, $5 million is allocated to complete unfinished homes.
The Ministry of Infrastructure (MOI) is set to receive $10 million to finalize road projects, enhancing connectivity across the islands.
A further $300,000 is designated for MOI to rehabilitate the Ha’apai foreshore.
Lulutai Airlines is slated to receive $2 million to maintain flight operations, ensuring continued domestic connectivity despite its current financial challenges.
A $5.3 million is proposed to increase government shares in the Tonga Development Bank.
An extra $4 million for MEIDECC was also approved as an emergency fund under the climate change convention obligations, bringing the total to $5 million. These funds, according to the Minister for MEIDECC Hon. Dr. Taniela Fusimalohi, aim to assist those affected by flooding, water security issues, and to provide safe housing, health, and sanitation services, with utilization planned by June.
Prime Minister Eke emphasized the government’s commitment to prudent spending and addressing critical issues, stating, “We are committed to be more wise in public spending and to protect people’s lives and property.”
The supplementary budget awaits parliamentary approval this week.
