The government has initiated a pilot bus service to alleviate morning and afternoon traffic congestion in Hahake.
Announced by the Minister for Infrastructure, Hon. Dr. Taniela Fusimalohi, at a press conference on Friday, the trial targets Tongatapu constituencies 9 and 10.

The initiative aims to assess the effectiveness of public-private partnerships in reducing the number of vehicles on the road during peak hours.
Dr. Fusimalohi said the project will start with two buses remaining from a fleet donated from China to government.
Meanwhile, government is deliberating whether to employ drivers directly or delegate this responsibility to the constituencies. Bus fares collected during the trial will be allocated for maintenance purposes.
Several bus stops have already been constructed in Lapaha, Talasiu, Hoi, and Niutoua, with plans to build more in Makaunga, Talafo’ou, Afa, Nukuleka, Nautoka, and Kolonga.
Lapaha Town Officer Siosifa Lamipeti expressed gratitude, stating, “I am thankful for the Tongatapu Constituency No.10 (Minister for Trade & Economic Development Hon. Kapelieli Lanumata) for pushing the bus stop project forward.”
If successful, the model may be extended to Hihifo and central Tongatapu, potentially transforming public transportation across the region.
