A new barge donated by China’s Dongguan City is set to enhance transport in Tonga’s Ha’apai region.
The handover ceremony on March 31 at Taufa’ahau Tupou IV Wharf in Tonga was attended by Chinese Ambassador Liu Weimin, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Lord Tu’iha’angana, Minister of Tourism and Justice Hon. Moʻale Finau, Governor of Ha’apai Dr. Pita Taufatofua, and MP Hon. Veivosa Taka.
Ambassador Liu Weimin highlighted the significance of the donation, stating it “serves as a vivid testament of China’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of the Tongan people” and “injects strong vitality into the development of sister-city relations between Dongguan and Ha’apai.”
Dr. Pita Taufatofua expressed gratitude for China’s assistance, noting the barge will “significantly enhance transport capacity in Ha’apai region, benefiting local communities.”
Hon. Moʻale Finau welcomed further bilateral cooperation, hoping for “continued bilateral cooperation to achieve mutual development,” and inviting more visits from Dongguan to Ha’apai.
