A man from Havelu has been charged with reckless driving following the death of Esilani Latu from Nakolo.
Police apprehended the suspect upon his return to Tonga from overseas. Chief Police Officer Saimone Fifita of the Mu’a Police Station confirmed the charge but clarified that no one has been charged with causing Latu’s death.
According to a medical report, marks on the deceased’s body were consistent with being run over by a vehicle.
However, Fifita noted, “There is no sufficient evidence to prove the death was caused by the vehicle running over the body.”
Investigators suggest the body may have been moved to the roadside after death, prompting police to treat the case as a possible homicide.
The accused remains in custody and is expected to appear in court in January.
Police investigations are ongoing as they seek further evidence in the case.
