According to Seluvaia ‘Ilolahi, Deputy Director of Tonga Meteorological Services, Nuku’alofa recorded 258mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, while ‘Eua saw over 300mm. This is three times more than the October monthly average of 80mm – 100mm recorded rainfall.

Over the past three days, an average of 100mm to 300mm of rain fell across Tongatapu, causing widespread flooding. Local authorities have issued public announcements advising residents to stay indoors and contact emergency services if evacuation is necessary.
Deputy Director of the National Emergency Management Office (NEMO), ‘Aisea Fungavai, reported that NEMO is working closely with authorities to prepare evacuation centers, clear roads, and ensure public safety.

The Bypass Road in Nuku’alofa has been severely flooded, stranding many vehicles. Residents are advised to avoid driving through the area. Some tree branches were broken and power lines have been damaged, though no reports of major structural damage have been made.

The Fua’amotu Weather Forecasting Centre has issued a gale warning for Ha’apai, Tongatapu, and ‘Eua, along with a flash flood advisory for all of Tonga.

The active weather system is expected to clear by Monday, but until then, residents are urged to heed warnings and stay informed through local updates from authorities.
