A local agribusiness has expanded export capacity after upgrading food processing equipment through a PHAMA Plus partnership.
Hihifo Food, a family-run exporter based in Ha’avakatolo, Tongatapu, now operates with modernised gear, including a food washing machine, forklift, 220KVA generator, and more.
The upgrade, launched by Prime Minister Hon Dr ‘Aisake Eke, is co-funded by the Australia and New Zealand-backed Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access Plus (PHAMA Plus) program.
Owner Mr Soane Tupou said the improvements will ease workloads and reduce losses caused by power outages.
“This investment will help us deliver more consistently, reduce damage from power cuts, and support the hard work of our staff—most of whom are women,” he said.
Hihifo Food exports frozen cassava, yam and taro to buyers in Sydney and sources produce from farming communities across Tonga. The company plays a key role in supporting rural livelihoods and Tonga’s agricultural sector.
Australian High Commissioner to Tonga, His Excellency Brek Batley, said, “This partnership reflects our joint commitment to fostering inclusive, resilient, and market-ready agribusinesses across the Pacific.”
The new equipment is expected to improve food hygiene, boost processing efficiency, and increase export volumes. Further expansion into New Zealand and regional markets is under consideration.
