His Majesty’s Prison held its Commissioned Officer’s Annual General Conference for FY 2024/25 from September 30 to October 6, 2024. The event, opened by Hon. Samiu Vaipulu, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice & Prisons, marked a significant shift with the inclusion of stakeholders such as Tonga Police, Ministry of Agriculture, and the Attorney General’s Office.
The collaboration aimed to bridge communication gaps between prison officers and key stakeholders, facilitating a smoother operation of the justice system. Tonga Police Commissioner Shane McLennan’s team presented on drugs, intelligence, and national security, reinforcing the ongoing partnership between law enforcement and the prison system.

“Prisons and police are two key pillars in criminal justice. Our collaboration ensures effective enforcement and rehabilitation efforts,” said Vaipulu.
The Attorney General’s Office provided comprehensive legal insights, particularly focusing on prisoners’ rights and the application of force. These discussions underscore the critical need for prison officers to be well-versed in Tonga’s legal framework to manage inmates effectively.
This year’s conference further promoted knowledge sharing and cooperation between prisons and essential services, highlighting their collective role in ensuring justice and public safety.
