The Chinese PLA Navy hospital ship Silk Road Ark docked at Tonga’s Vuna Wharf yesterday to offer free medical consultations and services.
Acting Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Taniela Fusimalohi welcomed the vessel, saying the visit highlights the “strengthening relationship between Tonga and the People’s Republic of China.”

Ambassador Liu Weimin described the “Mission Harmony” journey as reflecting China’s dedication to global health and humanitarian cooperation. He said the Friendship between Tonga and China “has grown from strength to strength through ongoing cooperation in various fields.”
Officials present included Cabinet Ministers, defence leaders, CEOs, diplomatic representatives, and members of Tonga’s Chinese community. The ship is expected to remain in port this week.
The hospital ship will provide medical care to Tongans free of charge, with services also to be delivered in remote communities. Commander Fang Jinsong and the mission team committed to support local health personnel, carry out surgeries, and conduct outreach beyond hospital settings including visits to ‘Eua.

This is the first visit of the Silk Road Ark to Tonga, though its sister ship Peace Ark visited in 2013, 2018, and 2023. The visit is seen as part of China’s broader South Pacific effort to build partnerships through aid, health service, and shared development.
Medical services onboard the ship are open to the public starting today.
