Tonga’s climate journey took a major step forward with the launch of the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT) Project in Nuku’alofa yesterday.
Hosted by Tonga’s Department of Climate Change and Department of Energy, the project’s inaugural workshop brought together government officials, NGOs, and private sector representatives to lay a strong foundation for the country’s climate goals according to a statement by the departments.
This initiative supports Tonga by strengthening systems to track greenhouse gas emissions and monitor sectors like electricity and transport. By enhancing Tonga’s Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems, the ICAT Project will enable the country to accurately track progress toward its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.
Ms. Celeste Gonzales from the ICAT Secretariat acknowledged Tonga’s commitment to transparency, highlighting the significance of collaboration for climate success.
Dr. Abdulmutalib Yussuff from UNEP-CCC emphasized the project’s role in building local capacity, ensuring data integrity, and promoting sustainable climate action.
With robust technical support and strategic partnerships, Tonga is better positioned to address climate challenges and meet its national climate targets, fostering a greener, sustainable future for the nation.
