Indonesia has officially joined the BRICS bloc, marking a milestone for the alliance as it continues to expand its global reach and influence.
Brazil, holding the 2025 BRICS presidency, announced Indonesia’s membership on Monday. The decision, endorsed during the August 2023 summit, was finalized following the establishment of Indonesia’s new government.
“This is a historic moment that reflects BRICS’ commitment to uniting the Global South,” Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said. “Indonesia’s inclusion strengthens our collective voice on global issues.”
China also welcomed the move, highlighting Indonesia’s economic and strategic importance. “Indonesia’s participation will inject fresh momentum into BRICS cooperation,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin.
With 277 million people, Indonesia bolsters BRICS, which now accounts for nearly 45% of the global population and 35% of GDP by purchasing power parity.
The bloc, formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China in 2009, has seen rapid expansion. Recent additions include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE, with Saudi Arabia set to join soon.
Indonesia’s membership highlights BRICS’ growing appeal among nations challenging Western-led institutions and pursuing greater representation in global decision-making.
