Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, has directed the military to develop a plan facilitating the “voluntary departure” of Gaza residents. This move aligns with U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent proposal to take control of Gaza, resettle its over 2 million Palestinian inhabitants, and transform the area into the “Riviera of the Middle East.”
Katz emphasized the importance of providing Gazans with options to emigrate, stating, “Gaza residents should be allowed the freedom to leave and emigrate, as is the norm around the world.” He suggested that countries critical of Israel’s actions, such as Spain, Ireland, and Norway, should accept these Palestinians.
The proposal has faced significant international backlash. Spain’s Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albares, rejected the idea, asserting that Gaza should remain part of a future Palestinian state. Palestinians have also expressed strong opposition, fearing a repeat of the 1948 Nakba, during which many were displaced.
This development follows a 16-month conflict initiated by a Hamas attack in 2023, resulting in over 47,000 Palestinian and hundreds of Israeli deaths. Critics have accused Israel of war crimes, allegations that the nation denies.
As the situation evolves, the international community closely monitors the potential implications for Gaza’s future and its residents.
