Japan’s Ambassador to Tonga, H.E. Mr. INAGAKI Hisao, signed agreements last Friday to fund two development projects: a new training gym for the Tonga Rugby Union’s High-Performance Academy and an upgraded water supply system for Mataika village in Vava’u.
The projects, worth over USD 140,000, are part of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP).
At a ceremony at the Ministry of Finance in Nuku’alofa, Ambassador Inagaki highlighted Japan’s commitment to addressing local needs effectively.
The new rugby facility in Fasi moe Afi, Tongatapu, aims to develop international-level athletes while enhancing cultural ties.
“We’re grateful for the assistance from Japan because they’re addressing critical needs that we had raised before about having adequate resources to support rugby training and education that will help develop professional rugby players for the nation,” said CEO for Tonga Rugby Union, ‘Aisea Aholelei.
It was emphasized that rugby has long been recognized as a medium of cultural exchange and diplomacy between Japan and Tonga since the first rugby players arrived in Tonga in 1982.

The Mataika water project will replace deteriorated infrastructure, ensuring a reliable supply for residents.
Over 300 GGP projects have been completed in Tonga by Japan.
