Former Wallabies star Toutai Kefu has been appointed head coach of the First Nations & Pasifika XV for their historic clash against the British & Irish Lions in Melbourne on July 22.
This marks Kefu’s first international coaching role since stepping down as Tonga’s head coach following the 2023 Rugby World Cup. The match, set to take place at Marvel Stadium, will celebrate the rich contributions of Indigenous Australian and Pasifika players to the sport.
“First Nations and Pasifika people contribute massively to the game all around the world,” Kefu said. “The significance of this game in celebrating those ongoing contributions can’t be overstated, especially against a team with the history of the British & Irish Lions.”
Kefu had hoped to include Moana Pasifika captain Ardie Savea, recently named Super Rugby Pacific’s inaugural Player of the Year, in the squad. However, eligibility rules prevent Savea from participating.
Despite this setback, Kefu remains optimistic. “I’ve had a lot of people reach out wanting to be involved—some of them aren’t even players!” he said.
The First Nations & Pasifika XV was established following the disbanding of the Melbourne Rebels, ensuring the Lions’ tour maintains a full schedule. The team will be comprised of players with Indigenous Australian and Pacific Island heritage.
This fixture is part of the Lions’ nine-match tour of Australia, which includes a three-Test series against the Wallabies. The tour starts with a match against the AUNZ Invitational XV in Adelaide on July 12.
