King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau’u joined worshippers at the Tuingapapai Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga in Māngere, Auckland, for a Good Friday service.
The royal couple’s presence was warmly received by the congregation, many of whom are part of Auckland’s large Tongan community. The Tuingapapai church, known for its traditional Tongan architecture, serves as a central place of worship for Tongans in Auckland.
A local attendee, Cass Vaea, shared on social media: “What a blessing to have our King and Queen worship with us today. Their presence made this Easter service truly special.”
The Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga is the largest Christian denomination in Tonga and has various branches spread across New Zealand.
The royal visit emphasises the importance of faith and community within the Tongan diaspora, especially during significant religious observances like Easter.
