King Tupou VI will officially open Tonga’s 2025 parliamentary session this Friday, marking his return to the national stage.
The ceremony, scheduled for 23 May in Nuku’alofa, will include a traditional school parade and attendance by members of parliament, government officials, diplomats, and invited guests, according to the Legislative Assembly.
This marks the King’s first in-person opening since 2023. Last year, Crown Prince Tupoutoʻa ʻUlukalala delivered the royal address on His Majesty’s behalf.
In his 2024 address, the King highlighted three national concerns: the proliferation of illicit drugs, the socio-economic impact of overseas labour schemes, and the migration of skilled workers.
The King’s return follows a period of political transition. In December 2024, former Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni resigned ahead of a no-confidence vote, leading to the appointment of Dr. ʻAisake Eke as Prime Minister.
The 2025 parliamentary session is expected to address these ongoing challenges, with the King’s presence stressing the importance of unity and collaboration among Tonga’s leadership.
