King Tupou VI has called for transparency and righteousness in financial management during his royal address from the throne, delivered yesterday at a soft closing ceremony in parliament.
The statement, read by Lord Ma’afu on behalf of His Majesty and accompanied by Lord Nuku and Lord Tu’ivakano, emphasised the duty of parliament to act with integrity in fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities.

The royal address highlighted the importance of transparency in financial management, emphasising the constitutional obligation to act righteously. “Honesty in managing public funds is paramount,” Lord Ma’afu said, urging Parliament to hold government officials accountable for their actions.
Reflecting on Tonga’s pre-colonial leadership, His Majesty cautioned leaders to learn from the past to avoid repeating historical mistakes. He referenced the Cenotaph at Pangai Si’i, which commemorates Tonga’s sacrifices in the name of freedom, urging today’s leaders to uphold that legacy for future generations.
The address concluded with a moral reminder drawn from the Ten Commandments, specifically the Fourth Commandment to keep the Sabbath holy, the Eighth against theft, and the Tenth against coveting.
The ceremony was attended by HRH Crown Princess, distinguished guests, and members of parliament.
The 2025-2026 parliamentary session is set to open on Friday, May 23rd.
