The Pacific Island nation of Kiribati has issued rare criticism of China following its intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch on 25 September, stating that the Pacific is not “isolated pockets of ocean” and it “does not welcome” Beijing’s actions.
Kiribati, which has close ties to China, was not notified of the launch. The Kiribati President’s Office expressed concerns, saying the missile, which landed in the Pacific, posed a threat to peace and stability. “We appeal to all countries involved in weapon testing to stop these acts,” the statement said.
This criticism comes amid rising tensions in the region, with China becoming a major development partner to Kiribati after the nation switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan in 2019.
Kiribati is set to hold a presidential election this month, with all candidates from incumbent President Taneti Maamau’s party, while opposition leader Tessie Lambourne has voiced concerns over Maamau’s close ties to Beijing.
