Lady Fane Fakafanua has officially been appointed the Honorary Consul of the Republic of India to the Kingdom of Tonga, based in Nukuʻalofa.
The appointment was formalised during a ceremony at St George Palace on 6 June 2025, where Prime Minister Hon. Dr. ’Aisake Valu Eke presented the Letter of Exequatur. The Crown Prince Tupoutoʻa ’Ulukalala, Cabinet ministers, senior officials and members of Lady Fakafanua’s family were also present.
Lady Fakafanua holds an M.A. in Diplomacy, Law and Business from the Jindal School of International Affairs, O.P. Jindal Global University. She “brings with her a wealth of experience, deep cultural understanding, and a strong commitment to advancing meaningful cooperation between the Republic of India and the Kingdom of Tonga,” a statement from the consular stated.
The appointment signals ‘growing strength’ in diplomatic, economic and cultural relations between India and Tonga. Bilateral ties have deep roots, with state visits by Tonga’s late King Tupou IV and Queen to India in the 1970s and by India’s Indira Gandhi to Tonga in 1981.
India has continued to invest in Tonga through grant‑in‑aid schemes, training programs and regional initiatives such as Forum for India-Pacific Islands cooperation (FIPIC) and India and the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
The Consular Office of India is located at the Fakafanua Centre in Ma’ufanga.
