Lakapi Samoa, the governing body of Samoan rugby, is gearing up for a grand celebration as it marks its 100-year anniversary on August 25th. The milestone will be commemorated with a series of events honouring the rich history and legacy of rugby in Samoa.
Lakapi Samoa’s Chief Executive Officer, Faleomavaega Vincent Fepuleai, confirmed the plans, noting the significance of this centennial celebration. “Yes, we will be having our celebration on Sunday the 25th,” Fepuleai stated. “Initially, we planned to hold it at the Mulivai Cathedral, but due to ongoing renovations for the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, we’ve moved the event to St Theresa Catholic Church in Lepea.”
The celebration is set to be an extensive affair, kicking off with a march on August 27th featuring around 600 former rugby players. “All the old boys and everyone who has played for Manu Samoa, the 18 sub-unions, clubs, and colleges who participated in rugby will be part of this,” Fepuleai added. The march will be followed by a Capping Awards night on August 28th at Friendship Park, where all past players of Manu Samoa will be honored.
Fepuleai highlighted the challenges of tracking the records of players from the early decades. “It was really hard to find their records, especially from the 1920s to the 1950s and 60s. Most rugby teams in those days have photos but lack names. From the 60s onward, we have their records.”
In addition to recognising former players, Lakapi Samoa will also be presenting special awards to administration officers, officials, physios, coaches, doctors, and others who have contributed to the sport’s development in Samoa.
The week-long festivities will culminate in a beer festival at the Siva Afi complex, offering the public a chance to meet and celebrate with both former and current Manu Samoa players.
