Lapaha district has launched a community-wide inspection of emergency kits to strengthen disaster preparedness as Tonga enters cyclone season.
The district officer, in partnership with the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDRMO), checked residents’ “72-hour bags” to ensure they contained essential supplies for three days.
Siosifa Lamipeti, Lapaha district officer, highlighted the importance of the initiative. “This activity was to reinforce disaster readiness in the community as Tonga enters cyclone season.”
The emergency kits typically include food, water, first aid supplies, flashlights, batteries, and important documents. The inspections ensure that each household is adequately prepared for potential natural disasters.

This is the first time such a program has been conducted at the village level, aiming to instill a culture of readiness among residents.
By conducting these inspections, Lapaha district hopes to set an example for other communities, ensuring families have the necessary resources to remain safe and resilient during emergencies.
Tonga’s cyclone season brings the risk of severe weather events, making preparedness crucial. Authorities continue to encourage the public to review their emergency supplies and stay updated on cyclone warnings.
