The Attorney General’s Office in Tonga has launched Law Week 2024, focusing on the theme “Laws for the Conservation and Protection of Our Ocean and its Resources.”
Running from 8-16 November, the event aims to educate the public on ocean conservation laws.
Rose Kautoke from the Attorney General’s Office, in an interview with Tonga Broadcasting Commission, said, “The theme highlights the ocean and species to people’s health. It’s a global and national theme… we thought to highlight the legal component of the ocean.”
Law Week also sets the stage for the upcoming Ocean Management Bill, designed to regulate activities in Tongan waters.
The week-long program includes outreach events, poetry and photography competitions, and exhibits at Queen Salote Memorial Hall. The Attorney General’s Office will also conduct awareness programs to inform the public of their services.
Law Week, initiated in 2007 following the 2006 riots, emphasizes legal education and community engagement, with a hope this year to inspire youth to pursue careers in ocean protection.
