The Tonga Leitis Association (TLA) marched in the 2025 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras on a float which highlighted climate resilience and LGBTQIA+ pride. The 2-week event was held from February 14 to March 2.
“Our theme was ‘Free to Be, Free to Thrive. Our Ocean is Rising, and So Are We,’” said TLA. “These powerful words were printed on our t-shirts and featured on our float.”

TLA explained that its float’s skirting symbolized the ocean—both a life-giving force and a threat due to the ongoing climate crisis. Tonga is still recovering from the devastating 2022 tsunami, and rising seas continue to endanger Pacific communities.
The tray of the float was adorned with lush greenery, representing the islands. “To the outside world, our islands might appear as a paradise getaway, but to us, they are everything,” said TLA. “Our identity, culture, and way of life are deeply connected to the land we come from.”

As LGBTQIA+ Pacific Islanders, TLA members honoured their cultural heritage, marching with reigning Miss Galaxy 2024 in traditional woven attire. “We marched and danced with pride for our ancestors, showing that our joy was an act of resilience.”

TLA expressed gratitude to 350 Pacific, the Tongan communities, and Pasifika teams from Fiji, Samoa, and beyond for their support. “Thank you so much for the love. We hope to join again next year.”
