The Lithuanian government has confirmed a proposal to establish diplomatic relations with the Tonga, marking a new chapter in Lithuania’s foreign policy in the Pacific.
Once approved, Rytis Paulauskas, Lithuania’s Ambassador to the United Nations, will be tasked with signing a joint communique formalising the diplomatic ties.
The proposal, put forward by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, follows the approval of the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs in 2021. The Ministry highlighted that this initiative aligns with Lithuania’s broader Indo-Pacific strategy, which seeks to expand bilateral cooperation and tap into the region’s potential.
Despite Lithuania’s intentions to strengthen ties with Tonga as early as 2013, formal diplomatic relations have not been established until now. This latest move reflects Lithuania’s continued interest in engaging with countries in the Pacific region.
