Internal Affairs Minister, Lord Vaea, delivered a powerful message at the UN ESCAP Asia-Pacific Ministerial meeting, urging a renewed focus on gender equality in the Pacific.
Speaking on behalf of the Pacific Islands Forum, Lord Vaea stressed the region’s commitment to peace, security, and social inclusion, while acknowledging both progress and persistent challenges.
Looking ahead to the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action in 2025, he emphasized the need for self-reflection on gender equality advancements.
“It is a pivotal moment for us to reflect on how we have progressed and to challenge ourselves to continue improving the lives of women and girls,” he said.
Lord Vaea highlighted significant gains, including increased female participation in business leadership and decision-making, surpassing global averages.
However, he pointed out the ongoing challenges in areas like education, economic empowerment, and gender-based violence.
He also warned that climate change remains a key threat, disproportionately affecting women, especially those in remote areas.
“We must ensure no one is left behind,” Lord Vaea said.
