Former All Black and Tongan rugby star Malakai Fekitoa has charted a remarkable path through international rugby, with his journey now spotlighted in the new PMN video series “Pasifika Rugby Warriors Tackling Europe.”
At 32, Fekitoa reflects on his decision to leave New Zealand in 2017, a move that saw him transition from the All Blacks to various European clubs. “I was very young and decided to leave everything behind… to come over to Europe,” he said. His European tenure has included stints in France, England, Ireland, and currently, Italy with Benetton Rugby in the United Rugby Championship.
Adjusting to diverse cultures and languages posed challenges. “No matter who you are or how old you are, it’s always going to be very difficult,” Fekitoa said, recalling his initial move to France as “quite scary.” Despite these hurdles, he has embraced the passionate rugby culture across Europe, particularly in France, where fans’ enthusiasm is palpable even during training sessions.
Beyond the pitch, Fekitoa remains deeply connected to his Tongan roots. Following the 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai eruption and tsunami, he spearheaded fundraising efforts, raising over £50,000 to aid relief initiatives. His commitment to giving back showing his dedication to his heritage and community.
As Fekitoa continues his European rugby journey, his story exemplifies resilience, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to both his sport and cultural identity.
