The Ministry of MEIDECC’s Environment Department led a National Marine Turtle Workshop in Tonga, supported by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).
The workshop focused on turtle conservation, connectivity across the Pacific, and the growing risk of turtle extinction in the region.
Discussions emphasized World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) satellite tagging and nesting surveys, providing vital data to enhance conservation strategies.
Similar workshops were also conducted in Papua New Guinea and Fiji, led by SPREP, WWF-Pacific, and national partners such as TierraMar and VEPA.

The initiative is funded by the European Union and the Swedish Government through the By-catch and Integrated Ecosystem Management (BIEM) initiative, part of the Pacific-European Union Marine Partnership Programme.
