Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany’s center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has warned of the increasing risks posed to Europe by President Donald Trump and tech magnate Elon Musk, urging for a strategic shift away from U.S. influence.
In comments made Sunday, Merz stressed the need for Europe to strengthen its independence from the U.S., particularly as the transatlantic relationship shows signs of strain.
“My absolute priority will be to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible so that, step by step, we can really achieve independence from the USA,” Merz said.
“I never thought I would have to say something like this on a television program. But after Donald Trump’s statements last week at the latest, it is clear that the Americans, at least this part of the Americans, this administration, are largely indifferent to the fate of Europe.”
Merz suggested that Europe might need to explore alternative security measures, such as coordinating nuclear programs with the UK and France, and even consider the potential disbanding of NATO.
He also equated the pressure from the U.S. and Russia on Europe, criticizing Musk’s influence in German elections, calling it “a unique event” and accusing Washington of interference akin to Moscow’s tactics.
