The Tonga Meteorological Service (TMS) has announced a warning about the possible development of a tropical cyclone in Tongan waters this week.
Favourable atmospheric conditions, including surface temperatures and wind shear, are contributing to the potential formation of a Category 1 cyclone.
Petelo Taulaki from TMS told Tonga Broadcasting, “We are monitoring the situation and the potential for a category one cyclone.”
He added that the cyclone is likely to affect the northern parts of Tonga.
“We have noticed a lot of convective clouds and thunderstorms up north, factors that helps the development of a cyclone,” Taulaki said.
In the meantime, a strong wind warning remains in effect for Vava’u, Ha’apai, Tongatapu, and ‘Eua.
Heavy rain warning and flash flood advisory are also in place for Vava’u, Niuatoputapu, and Niuafo’ou land areas.
