Tongan bowler Milika Nathan claimed the women’s singles title at the World Bowls Champion of Champions in Auckland on Saturday, overcoming defending champion Anne Nunes of the United States in challenging weather at the Browns Bay Bowling Club.
Nathan, a teacher at Northcote Intermediate School, entered the tournament aiming only to secure a spot in the top eight.
However, she exceeded expectations, dominating Cook Islands’ Teokotai Jim in the quarterfinals and defeating England’s Stefanie Branfield in the semifinals.
In the final, Nathan outplayed Nunes in wet conditions, winning 5-4, 5-3. “At the start of this week, I was just trying to make it into the top eight,” Nathan said. “It’s crazy to think I’m a world champion.”
The tournament featured over 50 champion bowlers from 30 nations.
Nathan’s victory marks a historic moment for Tonga, showcasing her determination and skill on the global stage.
