The Minister for Internal Affairs (MIA), Hon. Sinaitakala Tu’ítahi, led the launch of the Tonga Returnees Support Program (TRSP) on Tuesday, emphasizing the government’s commitment to reintegrating returnees into society.
The event brought together key stakeholders, including the Minister of Police, the Australian High Commissioner, the Vice Chancellor of Tonga National University, and representatives from NGOs, police, church groups, and businesses.

The TRSP, supported by New Zealand and Australia, aims to help returnees rebuild their lives through a small grants fund for NGOs, national policy development, and a multi-agency task force.
During the launch, the Minister Tu’itahi highlighted the importance of supporting returnees as they transition back into their communities. “This program is about giving our people a second chance, ensuring they have the resources and support to reintegrate successfully,” she said.
The TRSP seeks to address challenges such as stigma and lack of resources by promoting acceptance and sustainable reintegration.
In his remarks, New Zealand High Commissioner H.E. Matthew Howell urged participants to prioritize returnees’ perspectives, understand their diverse backgrounds, and utilize TRSP funding effectively to support vulnerable individuals.
Tonga has seen an increase in deportations from countries like the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand. Between 2013 and 2018, New Zealand deported approximately 120 individuals with criminal convictions. From 2022 to early 2023, another 25 were deported from Australia, New Zealand, the U.S., and the Cook Islands.
