The Minister for Infrastructure provided a high-level report on Tonga’s infrastructure project’s progress at the Strategic Transport Infrastructure Advisory Program (STIAP) Seminar in Auckland last week.
Hon. Dr. Taniela Fusimalohi, led a delegation to the event based on a collaboration between Tonga’s Ministry of Infrastructure (MOI) and Australia’s National Transport Research Organisation (NTRO), aimed to enhance Tonga’s transport infrastructure.

This partnership is expected to improve Tonga’s transport infrastructure, leading to safer and more efficient travel systems.
The STIAP, initiated in 2024, focuses on improving road networks in Tongatapu and Vava’u, as well as six airports across Tonga.
Fusimalohi also outlined his ministry’s work program for the 2025/26 financial year
During last year’s launch of the partnership with NTRO, former infrastructure minister Toumo’ua had emphasized the government’s commitment to improving transport infrastructure, stating, “This new partnership agreement represents a high level of commitment by the Government of Tonga to improving our roads, ports and airport.”
The NTRO’s Executive Director, Jason Sprott, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, noting, “The NTRO is incredibly excited to advance work on this program as a ‘critical-friend’ to the Ministry of Infrastructure.”
