The Internal Affairs Minister, Hon. Sinai Tu’itahi, has dismissed reports claiming “no funds” for hosting the 2031 Pacific Games. She announced that both she and PM Hon Dr ‘Aisake Eke “agree to host the 2031 Pacific Games in Tonga” and have detailed funding plans to support the event.
Tu’itahi clarified in a statement this week that while cost estimates are finalised, the government will utilise the sports levy to cover expenses. She also confirmed two unnamed foreign countries have offered support. Revenue from accommodation fees paid by Pacific athletes and sponsorships is expected to offset budget needs.
Prime Minister Eke earlier reaffirmed that there are funds for the Games. A Kaniva news report had indicated Minister Tu’itahi’s assertion that officials are “looking for donors to help”.
It’s understood that preparations are well underway, with government and stakeholders having ample time to ensure readiness. Tu’itahi’s statement also comes in response to Deputy PM Taniela Fusimālohi’s warning, according to Kaniva news, that the sports levy might not fully cover the estimated US$26 million needed.
Plans include a six‑year roadmap, including infrastructure upgrades and financial strategies, expected to be tabled in parliament in the coming months.
