The Ministry of Infrastructure is progressing its road maintenance initiatives, focusing on its commitment to sustainable infrastructure, promising safer, smoother commutes for all.
Key projects are underway, including the restoration of Hihifo Road, spanning from Maui to Kolomotu’a, a major route for travel.
The Ministry said in a statement that construction teams have completed sealcoating in the Maui section, a significant milestone aimed at enhancing road durability.
However, work on the remaining sections has temporarily been paused to address urgent road damage in Nuku’alofa, caused by recent heavy rains.

“These roads are essential for our communities and economy, so ensuring their reliability and safety is our top priority,” the Ministry said in a statement.
In response to the Nuku’alofa damage, crews have shifted focus, filling potholes, reinforcing structures, and re-sealing affected areas to mitigate safety risks.
Plans are in place to establish a long-term maintenance schedule for Hihifo Road and other high-traffic routes to prevent future deterioration.
