Lord Tu’iavakano will represent Tonga at a key regional population forum in Kuala Lumpur this Sunday.
The 15th General Assembly of the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD) will bring together delegates from 30 countries across Asia and the Pacific, including Tonga.
Lord Tu’iavakano, a senior Tongan MP and AFPPD member, will join discussions on population, development, and health. The forum, hosted by AFPPD Malaysia with backing from the Japan Trust Fund and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), aims to review AFPPD’s 2023–2025 strategic plan and shape priorities for 2025–2029.
Delegates will also select a new host country for the AFPPD Secretariat and elect members to the Executive Committee.
A core focus of the forum is reaffirming AFPPD’s commitment to the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action and the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Participants will share national experiences and best practices in addressing population issues. A study visit on April 28 will offer insight into Malaysia’s strategies on ageing and public health.
Tonga’s participation highlights its engagement in regional efforts to address shared demographic challenges.
