Health Minister Dr. ‘Ana ‘Akau’ola and Tongatapu 6 MP Hon. Dulcie Tei join female legislators worldwide to discuss strategies for gender parity at the IPU Global Conference of Women Parliamentarians in Mexico City from March 13-16, 2025.
The conference, themed “From Mexico to the World: Let’s Mobilize for Gender Parity!”, provides a platform for women MPs to exchange experiences and define strategies to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Participants will engage in interactive panels and working group sessions, addressing topics such as engaging men in advancing gender equality, breaking ceilings for women’s leadership, and achieving zero tolerance for violence against women in politics.
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, the country’s first female leader, will open the conference.
Tonga’s participation highlights its commitment to promoting gender parity and strengthening women’s leadership. Notably, women parliamentarians are still rarer in the Pacific, comprising less than 10 percent of elected officials.
The conference aims to inspire action towards achieving equal participation and power for women in political decision-making.
The event is jointly organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Senate of Mexico.
