Nailini Helu, known as the “Tongan Goddess,” is set to make history as she challenges two-division world champion Lani Daniels for the IBF Light Heavyweight title on April 5 at the Taupo Events Centre in New Zealand.
Born in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, Helu moved to New Zealand with her family and trained under legendary coach Lolo Heimuli at Balmoral Lee Gar. She quickly made a name for herself in the amateur boxing scene, winning three New Zealand National Championships in 2012, 2014, and 2015. During this period, she also fought Lani Daniels’ sister, Caroline, in the national finals.
In 2016, Helu turned professional, making her debut in April at The Trusts Arena. She secured early victories over Kirsty Lupeamanu and Sarah Long, climbing the rankings. Later that year, she fought for the New Zealand national heavyweight title against Ange Davis in September. Initially declared the winner, the decision was later changed to a draw due to a scoring error.

Between 2016 and 2018, Helu faced setbacks, including losses to Lani Daniels and world title contender Alrie Meleisea. After a four-year break, she made a comeback in 2022, reclaiming momentum by winning the PBCNZ South Pacific Super Middleweight title against Tinta Smith. In 2023, she faced Desley Robinson for the WBA Oceania title, narrowly losing by split decision.
In early 2024, Helu rematched and defeated Tinta Smith to regain the South Pacific title. This victory earned her a top 6 ranking with the IBF and 7th on BoxRec, making her eligible for a world title shot. Tragically, in January, her uncle and coach, Aloisio Helu, passed away. Aloisio had provided free boxing training in Ōtara and helped coach Tonga’s team at the 2011 AIBA World Championship.
Now, with a world title opportunity ahead, Nailini Helu stands on the brink of history to continue inspiring female boxers from the Pacific region. The boxing community anticipates a compelling contest between her and Daniels.
