The Ministry of MEIDECC has announced a nationwide test of the National Early Warning System (NEWS) today, expected to start at 12:15 p.m.
The Department of Communication will activate the system across Tongatapu, ‘Eua, Ha‘apai, Vava‘u, and Niuatoputapu. Officials confirmed that a clear message stating “THIS IS A TEST” will be broadcast via sirens and Remote Activated Receiver (RAR) radios.
The ministry said the test is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the system is fully operational in the event of natural disasters such as tsunamis and cyclones.
Authorities urged the public not to panic during the test and assured that it will be conducted monthly on the last Friday of each month until further notice.
Tonga, situated in the Pacific’s “Ring of Fire,” is highly vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis. The early warning system plays a critical role in national disaster preparedness.
For further information, the public is advised to follow updates from the Department of Communication under MEIDECC.
