The Tongafish Pathway Project funded by the World Bank and managed by the Ministry of Fisheries delivered 11 boats to Special Management Area (SMA) communities in Ha’apai this week.
The handover ceremony, led by Acting Minister of Fisheries Lord Fohe, marked a commitment to empowering local communities in managing their marine resources.
“These boats will enhance community capacity for sustainable fisheries management, helping ensure these resources benefit future generations,” said Lord Fohe, thanking the World Bank for its support.
Dr. Tevita Vea’ila, Safeguard Officer for the project, presented safety guidelines and operational best practices, stressing the role of SMA communities in maintaining sustainable practices. His insights reinforced the project’s goals of safety, local capacity-building, and environmental stewardship.
The Tongafish Pathway Project has become a key driver for Tonga’s fisheries sector in advancing its sustainable development goals.
