The Government has launched a comprehensive digital platform to streamline public services nationwide.
The Government introduced a new e-government portal, TongaPass digital ID, and an API integration platform, marking a significant step in its digital transformation journey. These initiatives aim to enhance efficiency and accessibility in public service delivery.
Prime Minister Dr. ‘Aisake Eke emphasised the government’s commitment, “The purpose of this initiative is to make Government services more accessible to the public.”
The e-government portal serves as a centralised hub for various government services, reducing the need for citizens to visit multiple ministries. For example, business license renewals, previously requiring visits to both the Ministry of Trade and Economic Development and Revenue Services, can now be processed online.
TongaPass, the new digital identification system, assigns a unique ID number to every registered individual, facilitating secure access to government services. This system also upgrades the nation’s Civil Registration system, ensuring accurate and efficient identity verification.
The API platform enables secure data transmission and seamless interaction between different government ministry systems. This integration allows for the delivery of complex, multi-ministerial e-services through a single, streamlined online workflow.
The World Bank has been a key funding partner in this endeavor, providing support to the Government of Tonga in establishing this comprehensive digitization effort.
These digital initiatives align with the Tonga Digital Government Strategic Framework (2019–2024), which promotes the use of ICT within government ministries and agencies.
Citizens are encouraged to visit the new e-government portal at www.gov.to and follow the official Government of Tonga Facebook page for further updates and information on newly available e-services.
