From January 2025, New Zealanders visiting the UK will need to apply for an electronic travel authorisation (ETA), as the UK transitions to a digital border system. Flight Centre NZ general manager Heidi Walker warns that travellers unaware of this change could face costly issues if denied boarding.
Previously, New Zealanders could visit the UK for up to six months without a visa, but the new rules will require advance permission. Eligible travellers can apply for an ETA from November 27, 2024, with the requirement becoming compulsory by January 8, 2025.
The ETA will cost £10 (NZ$21) and take around three days to process.
“Many Kiwis may not realise they need this, and it could result in expensive mistakes if they’re turned away at check-in,” Walker said.
The UK Home Office stated that digitisation aims to streamline entry and enhance security for millions of travellers.
