New Zealand powered past Tonga 8-0, while Samoa claimed their first-ever World Cup spot with a 2-0 victory against New Caledonia in the OFC tournament.
New Zealand, known for their quick start, took an early lead through Laura Bennett. Katie Pugh added a second goal in the 12th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error. Grace Duncan made it 3-0 before Pia Vlok added a fourth after a spill from Tongan goalkeeper Temaleti Taufa’ao.
Despite the scoreline, Tonga didn’t back down. Tyra Bagiante’s breakaway effort forced a brilliant save from Kiwi goalkeeper Muller, and Cienna Filimoeatu’s attack was denied by Charley Marsh.
In the second half, New Zealand continued their dominance. Kara McGillivray scored from a surprising effort, and Marsh added a sixth. Tonga’s Kuria Malohifo’ou came close, hitting the crossbar, but New Zealand’s defense remained unbroken. Derelle Avery’s late strike made it 7-0, and Duncan’s free-kick sealed the 8-0 rout.
Samoa’s win over New Caledonia secured their historic World Cup berth, joining hosts Morocco, China, Japan, the Korean Republic, and the People’s Republic of Korea. New Zealand and Samoa will face off in the tournament final on Saturday.
