New Zealand’s government has broadened the scope of its Royal Commission of Inquiry into the COVID-19 response, inviting public submissions through a newly launched online portal.
Internal Affairs Minister Brooke van Velden emphasized the portal’s role in facilitating public participation. “The portal is an easy way for members of the public to have their say to the Inquiry about how the response to the COVID-19 pandemic affected them, their families, and their businesses,” she stated.
The expanded inquiry will examine critical aspects of the pandemic response, including the use of vaccines, lockdowns, testing, and public health materials. This move aligns with commitments outlined in the ACT-National and New Zealand First-National coalition agreements to address outstanding public concerns.
Phase 2 of the Inquiry commenced on 29 November and is scheduled to deliver its final report in February 2026. The government encourages all citizens to contribute their experiences and perspectives via the portal at www.covid19inquiry.nz. Submissions will be accepted until midnight on 27 April 2025.
Minister van Velden urged participation, stating, “I would strongly encourage New Zealanders to have their say by making a submission to the Inquiry. I look forward to seeing the final report delivered to me in February 2026.”
